Artist Residences and Field Trip

Working with the public schools and the Mississippi Arts Commission, MCC sponsored several additional artists residencies over the next two years. A Folk Artist residency brought four local quilters and a blues musician to the junior and senior high schools in 1980-81. The quilters' residency included an exhibit of local quilts in the National Guard Armory and marked the beginning of the association between MCC and Hystercine Rankin, a local quilter whose artistic talents would enrich MCC's programs in many ways in the years to come.

From the beginning MCC, sponsored student field trips to cultural events and resource centers that related to the local African-American culture or to historical documentation, including the Delta Blues Festival, the Mississippi Historical Museum, Mississippi ETV, and Foxfire.
